Northern Lights can be hunted during winter for groups at Luosto and at the company's fixed base, the Aurora House "Pohjan Kruunu" (38 km by car from Luosto, only 25 km by snowmobile, 11 km by car from Sodankylä). (Please note that advance booking is necessary)
At the Aurora house you can admire the beauty of the norhern lights, even when it is cloudy, beacuse they have made beautiful pictures and videos og northern lights. These are then projected on the ceiling of the teepee. As the show proceeds, a professional guide will explain everything about the aurora borealis or northern lights. This includes the scientific aspects as well as ancient beliefs connected with the phenomenon.
The teepee itself, the Pohjan Kruunu (The Northern Crown), is at Välisuvanto about 12 km from the centre of Sodankylä on the eastern shore of the river Kitinen.
The people behind these programmes are active researchers of the northern lights, Esa Turunen and Jyrki Manninen at the Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory.
At Luosto you can get instructions in snowshoeing as well as instructions in cross-country skiing by Taina Itkonen and Raili Turunen. These two ladies are both Olympic and World Championship winners. They also have top achievements in Finnish Championships in skiing and in the Finlandia 100 km skiing competition.
